Messages on Fasting and Sacrifice

The demanding collection. Fasting is presented alongside prayer as one of the two great weapons, capable, in one famous message, of stopping wars and suspending the laws of nature. But sacrifice is broadened beyond food: offering up sufferings, renouncing whatever distances the heart from God ("false happiness, false hope, false splendor"), and making one's very life an offering. It is the theme where love stops being sentiment and starts costing something.
