Sacred Heart Consecration

What It Is and What It Does


Sacred Heart consecration is the act of entrusting your life, your family, or your home to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the burning, loving, wounded Heart of the Son of God, who loved us to the end and proved it on the cross.


This devotion flows from the apparitions of Jesus to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a Visitation nun in Paray-le-Monial, France, between 1673 and 1675. Jesus appeared to her and revealed His Heart, surrounded by flames of love, crowned with thorns, surmounted by a cross, and radiating light. He told her that His Heart was "so full of love for mankind that it could no longer contain within itself the flames of its burning love." He asked for acts of reparation, for Holy Communion on First Fridays, and for the solemn enthronement of His Sacred Heart in homes and families.


The connection to Our Lady is direct. At Pellevoisin (1876), she appeared wearing the Scapular of the Sacred Heart on her breast and said, "I love this devotion." She said, "My Son's Heart is so full of love that He will not refuse my demands." At Montichiari (1947), she said, "My Divine Son is total Love, and He is sending me." At every apparition, she leads us to His Heart. The Sacred Heart devotion is where that journey arrives.


Pope Pius IX consecrated the entire Catholic Church to the Sacred Heart in 1875. Pope Leo XIII consecrated the entire human race in 1899, calling it "the great act" of his pontificate. The devotion is not peripheral. It is at the center of the Church's spiritual life, because Jesus Himself asked for it.


What changes when you consecrate yourself to the Sacred Heart? You give your heart to the One who gave His first. You place your family under the protection of a love that is literally on fire for you. You make your home a sanctuary where His presence is acknowledged and enthroned. And you receive the promises He made to St. Margaret Mary, promises so generous they sound almost too good to be true, except that the One who made them is God.


How To


Sacred Heart consecration can be made personally, as a family, or as a household through the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart.

Personal Consecration

There is no fixed thirty-three-day preparation for the Sacred Heart consecration, though many people prepare by making the Nine First Fridays devotion and by reading about the apparitions to St. Margaret Mary. Fr. Michael Gaitley's Consoling the Heart of Jesus offers a thirty-three-day retreat format focused on the Sacred Heart and Divine Mercy.


On the Feast of the Sacred Heart (the Friday following the second Sunday after Pentecost, usually in June), or on any First Friday, go to Mass, receive Holy Communion, and pray the Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart.

The Enthronement is the act of formally placing an image of the Sacred Heart in a place of honor in your home and consecrating your family to His Heart. It is one of the most powerful things you can do for your household.


Obtain a blessed image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a framed picture or statue. Choose a prominent place in your home, ideally the main living area where the family gathers. Invite a priest to bless the image and lead the enthronement ceremony, or lead it yourself as a family. Gather together, pray the Act of Consecration, and place the image in its place of honor. From that day forward, your home belongs to His Heart.

Jesus told St. Margaret Mary that He promised extraordinary graces to those who would receive Holy Communion on the First Friday of nine consecutive months. The greatest of these promises: "I promise you, in the excessive mercy of My Heart, that My all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance. They shall not die in My displeasure, nor without receiving their sacraments. My Divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in that last moment."


To make the Nine First Fridays: go to confession before or close to each First Friday, receive Holy Communion on the First Friday of nine consecutive months, and offer each Communion in reparation for sins committed against the Sacred Heart.

Jesus made twelve promises to St. Margaret Mary for those devoted to His Sacred Heart:

  1. I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.

  2. I will establish peace in their homes.

  3. I will comfort them in all their afflictions.

  4. I will be their secure refuge during life and above all in death.

  5. I will bestow a large blessing upon all their undertakings.

  6. Sinners shall find in My Heart the source and the infinite ocean of mercy.

  7. Tepid souls shall grow fervent.

  8. Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.

  9. I will bless every place where a picture of My Heart shall be set up and honored.

  10. I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.

  11. Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in My Heart, never to be blotted out.

  12. I promise you in the excessive mercy of My Heart that My all-powerful love will grant to all those who communicate on the First Friday in nine consecutive months the grace of final penitence.


Prayers


Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus:

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, to you I consecrate and offer up my person and my life, my actions, trials, and sufferings, that my entire being may henceforth only be employed in loving, honoring, and glorifying you.


This is my irrevocable will, to belong entirely to you, and to do all for your love, renouncing with my whole heart all that can displease you.


I take you, O Sacred Heart, for the sole object of my love, the protection of my life, the pledge of my salvation, the remedy of my frailty and inconstancy, the reparation for all the defects of my life, and my secure refuge at the hour of my death.


Be, O Heart of goodness, my justification before God your Father, and screen me from His anger which I have so justly merited. I fear all from my own weakness and malice, but placing my entire confidence in you, O Heart of Love, I hope all from your goodness and bounty.


Destroy in me all that can displease or resist you. Imprint your pure love so deeply in my heart that I may never forget you or be separated from you.


I beseech you, through your goodness, that my name be engraved upon your Heart, for in this I place all my happiness and all my glory, to live and to die as one of your devoted servants. Amen.


Morning Offering to the Sacred Heart:

O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day, for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, in reparation for my sins, for the intentions of all my relatives and friends, and in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father. Amen.


Prayer for the Enthronement of the Home:

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, we place all our trust in you. We consecrate to you our home, our family, and all that we have. Reign over our minds by faith, over our hearts by charity, and over all our actions. We promise to live according to your Holy Gospel, to nurture our family in the practice of the Christian life, and to bring your peace to all who enter this home.


O Sacred Heart of Jesus, protect our home. Bless our family. Guard us in times of trial. Comfort us in sorrow. Strengthen us in temptation. And when our pilgrimage on earth is over, receive us into your Eternal Home in heaven. Amen.
