The prayer for priests and consecrated souls, born from three roses that healed three swords.

The Rosary of the Mystic Rose

TLDR

The Rosa Mystica devotion centers on the Hour of Grace and the three roses Our Lady revealed at Montichiari, Italy, in 1947: white for prayer, red for sacrifice, and golden for penance. These three roses are the remedy for the three swords that pierced her heart: unworthy Communion, abandoned vocations, and betrayed faith. The devotion is prayed especially for priests and consecrated souls, and it received a Nihil Obstat from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith in July 2024.

History

On July 13, 1947, Our Lady appeared to Pierina Gilli in a hospital chapel in Montichiari, Italy. In her first apparition, she wore a violet dress and her heart was pierced by three swords. She explained that the first sword was for priests and religious who celebrate Mass and receive Communion unworthily. The second was for those who abandon their vocations. The third was for those who betray the faith.

In her next apparition, the three swords were gone. In their place, on her white dress, were three roses: a white rose for the spirit of prayer, a red rose for the spirit of sacrifice, and a golden rose for the spirit of penance and conversion. The roses were the cure for the swords. She said, "I wish to be known as the Mystical Rose," and she asked that July 13 be celebrated each year in her honor.

On December 8, 1947, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, she appeared descending a great white staircase decorated with white, red, and golden roses, and announced the Hour of Grace: a special time of prayer on December 8 at noon, during which she promised extraordinary conversions and graces.

She said, "Hardened and cold hearts resembling this marble will be touched by divine Grace."

Nineteen years later, in 1966, she returned at Fontanelle, outside Montichiari, and blessed a spring with miraculous powers. She asked that a crucifix be placed at the spring so that all who came would ask pardon from her Son before drawing the water.

The connection to Fatima is direct. She appeared on July 13, the same date as the Fatima apparition where the three children saw hell and received the secrets. And she appeared with the deceased Fatima visionaries, Francisco and Jacinta, at her sides, telling Pierina they would help her in her suffering. Rosa Mystica is a continuation of Fatima, addressed specifically to the clergy and consecrated souls who serve at the altar.

Promises

Our Lady's promises at Montichiari are tied to the three roses and the Hour of Grace:

Those who honor her as the Mystical Rose will receive her special protection and an increase in vocations within their religious communities and orders.

On December 8 at noon, during the Hour of Grace, she promised great and numerous conversions: "Hardened and cold hearts resembling this marble will be touched by divine Grace, and they will become faithful to Our Lord in loyal love."

She promised that those who offer the three roses, prayer, sacrifice, and penance, would help remove the swords from her heart and console the Heart of her Son.

She said, "Live out of love!" and promised that a life lived in love would be the most powerful force against the darkness threatening the Church from within.

How To

The Rosa Mystica devotion can be practiced in several ways:

The Hour of Grace

On December 8, at noon (local time), pray for one hour in a church or chapel, or wherever you are. This can be prayed alone or in a group. Our Lady asked for this specific hour on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception as a time of extraordinary grace. Pray the Rosary, meditate on the three roses, and offer your prayers for priests, for vocations, and for the conversion of sinners.

Some communities observe the Hour of Grace on the 13th of each month, connecting the devotion to its Fatima roots.

The Three Roses Offering

Each day, or whenever you pray for priests and consecrated souls, consciously offer the three roses to Our Lady:

A white rose: an act of prayer. Pray a Rosary, a decade, a Memorare, or any prayer offered specifically for priests and religious.

A red rose: an act of sacrifice. Offer a specific sacrifice that day, however small, for the sanctification of priests and the perseverance of those in consecrated life.

A golden rose: an act of penance. Accept a daily cross, a frustration, a difficulty, and offer it in the spirit of penance for the conversion of souls who have wandered from their vocation.

The Rosa Mystica Rosary

Some communities pray a specific Rosa Mystica Rosary, which meditates on the three roses and the messages given at Montichiari. It follows the structure of the traditional Rosary but incorporates the intentions Our Lady expressed: reparation for unworthy Communions, prayers for abandoned vocations, and penance for betrayed faith.

Between each decade, the following prayer is offered:

"O Mary, Mystical Rose, Queen of Apostles, we beg you to send us good and saintly priests and religious."

Visiting the Spring at Fontanelle

Our Lady asked that a crucifix be placed beside the spring and that all who come would first ask pardon from her Son "with a beautiful kiss of love" before drawing the water. For those who cannot visit in person, the spirit of this instruction can be lived anywhere: approach Our Lady's graces through repentance first, then receive what she offers.
